IRVINE, Calif., Oct 28, 2004 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a leading provider of highly integrated semiconductor solutions enabling broadband communications, today announced that its Internet Protocol (IP) phone chips are incorporated into four models of Inter-Tel Incorporated's recently launched multi-protocol IP phones. Inter-Tel's election to use Broadcom® chips for its IP phones exemplifies how Broadcom is rapidly growing its market share in the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) business market.
The Broadcom® BCM11xx family of highly integrated IP phone chips enable manufacturers to build feature-rich IP phone solutions at economical price values for the business communications markets. With these chips, Inter-Tel developed a cost-effective, high-performance, family of IP phones that offer numerous features and functionality. Each of the new Inter-Tel IP phones -- Models 8600, 8620, 8662, and 8690 -- can be configured with either Inter-Tel's Axxess® protocol or Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), the industry standard for real-time IP communications.
"Enabling business communications systems leaders like Inter-Tel to successfully offer high-quality, cost-effective VoIP products is an integral part of our business plan," said Paul Shore, Director of Marketing, Voice over IP Client Products for Broadcom. "We feel strongly that Inter-Tel's innovative new IP phones and market position will serve as yet additional catalysts to accelerate VoIP adoption in the enterprise market."
"Broadcom's feature-rich and field-proven devices, and its outstanding technical support, have enabled us to bring new cost-effective phones to market quickly and efficiently," said Jeffrey T. Ford, Inter-Tel's Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. "As we accelerate the transition from TDM to IP, we have looked to Broadcom's VoIP and Ethernet expertise to ensure that we do not compromise voice quality along the way."
Broadcom's VoIP Products
Broadcom's IP phone chips are some of the most advanced solutions in the industry, offering a range of both high-end and basic voice and data capabilities. These chips, coupled with Broadcom's proven Ethernet networking and VoIP gateway technologies, are enabling manufacturers to deliver economical solutions for migrating businesses to complete IP telephony systems.
The BCM1101, BCM1113 and BCM1115 are part of Broadcom's BCM11xx IP phone family, which are incorporated into four models of Inter-Tel's IP phones. Each features a MIPS32® RISC processor to support advanced computer telephony integration (CTI) applications, as well as a powerful dual-MAC digital signal processor (DSP). The integrated Ethernet MAC in each chip supports IEEE 802.1p packet prioritization and 802.1Q VLAN identification. Also integrated into the chips are analog codecs capable of supporting both narrowband 8 Kilohertz (KHz) and wideband 16 KHz sampling, which in conjunction with wideband vocoders, such as the Broadcom BroadVoice32™, will enable IP phone networks to deliver high-fidelity voice transmission. The BCM11xx family includes an integrated 10/100 Ethernet transceiver that is designed and tested to withstand 2000 volts of cable-sourced electrostatic discharge (CESD), which helps prevent the system from being damaged or destroyed due to electric discharge during installation and cable insertion. The BCM1101 and BCM1113 also include a wire-speed, non-blocking 10/100 Ethernet switch.
Inter-Tel's VoIP Phones
The Inter-Tel Model 8690 is a multimedia touch-screen phone utilizing Microsoft® Windows® CE, and Inter-Tel's Unified Communicator® software, which allows users to define and control presence and availability and add Web-based applications. Inter-Tel's Model 8620 and Model 8662 are multi-protocol IP desktop phones that feature two 10/100 Ethernet ports to enable desktop PC access to a local area network (LAN) without the need for a second Ethernet connection at the desk. Inter-Tel's Model 8600 is the entry-level desktop phone designed for users who require basic functionality and for use in locations where a PC is not present, such as lobbies, hallways, classrooms and hospital rooms.
