IRVINE, Calif., Dec 19, 2007 -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that its digital TV (DTV) system-on-a-chip (SoC) technology has been selected by Syntax-Brillian Corporation for use in its newest Olevia™ 2T Series of LCD high definition televisions (HDTVs). Syntax-Brillian, one of the leading manufacturers of award-winning LCD HDTVs, utilizes the Broadcom® BCM3552 high definition digital TV SoC solution for its Olevia 2T Series including the model 226T (26-inch display), the model 232T (32-inch display) and the 237T (37-inch display), supporting WXGA display resolutions. Utilizing 65 nanometer process technology, the highly integrated and field proven BCM3552 DTV solution provides superior performance and quality, low power and a significantly reduced number of required components that enable Syntax-Brillian to cost-effectively develop its best-in-class Olevia HDTVs with unsurpassed home entertainment performance.

The BCM3552 is a member of Broadcom's family of high definition digital TV SoC solutions that also includes the BCM3553 (supports full HD 1080p resolution) and the BCM3563 (supports full HD 1080p resolution with picture-in-picture functionality) models. All of Broadcom's digital TV SoCs are highly integrated and provide superior picture quality, sound and graphics for developing complete lines of affordable TVs that support analog, high definition, standard definition and digital cable television programming. The highly integrated BCM3552 DTV SoC supports WXGA display resolution that enables the functionality of a complete high definition television on a single chip.

By implementing the Broadcom BCM3552 SoC, Syntax-Brillian's latest Olevia 2T Series of LCD HDTVs features exceptional picture and sound quality driven by stunningly crisp, rich and vibrant images that provide unsurpassed viewing clarity of high definition digital programs, as well as standard analog TV channels. Olevia 2T Series televisions are perfect for home or office viewing and can also double as computer displays with support for TV resolutions up to 1080p, and PC resolutions up to 1920 x 1080 through HDMI and VGA. The Olevia 2T Series includes built-in ATSC/NTSC tuners and two HDMI inputs, a PC input, three HD component video inputs and an RS-232 control that enables the Olevia 2T Series to connect to a home entertainment system.

BCM3552 Technical Information

The BCM3552 is a complete HDTV system-on-a-chip solution that supports WXGA wide screen display resolution. It is compatible with the National Television Systems Committee (NTSC) analog standard, the North American digital terrestrial or Advanced Television Committee (ATSC) digital standard and the digital cable television standard.

The BCM3552 features advanced technology for next generation televisions including a NTSC/PAL video decoder supported by a 3D comb filter and motion adaptive de-interlacing capabilities. It also integrates video processing functions for noise reduction, sharpness, dynamic contrast and color control, enabling manufacturers to customize the picture appearance so it remains compatible with their customers' expectations.

The BCM3552 also includes extensive audio support featuring a 5-band audio equalizer, independent audio output controls for both analog and digital outputs, integrated digital to analog converters (DACs), and an audio processor that decodes Dolby® Digital, TrusurroundXT and MPEG audio formats in real-time.

These essential television features, coupled with the chip's high degree of integration through its 65nm process, provides high quality picture and sound while reducing the number of chips and bill-of-material (BoM) cost required to build HDTV displays that support both analog and digital reception.

The 65 nanometer process is the most advanced lithographic node for manufacturing semiconductors in large volumes today and provides significant benefits over 90 nm and 130 nm processes by enabling lower power consumption, smaller size and higher levels of integration. For Broadcom, the move to the 65 nanometer process technology is changing the competitive landscape because of the breadth and depth of the intellectual property that the company possesses and can integrate into new devices. Without a broad portfolio of market-leading solutions to integrate, competitors are not able to take full advantage of the benefits that these next generation processes provide.
